Leaving the BioResource

Leaving the BioResource is very straightforward. You can leave at any time and do not need to give us a reason.

How to leave the BioResource

You can leave the BioResource by completing our withdrawal form online.

Alternatively you can email us on nbr@bioresource.nihr.ac.uk, please include  your full name and year of birth in the email. Or you can call us on 0800 090 22 33 .

Choosing what happens to your samples and data

If you choose to withdraw, we will ask you to decide what happens to your sample and your data going forward.

You need to choose from the following options:

A) No further contact withdrawal - I withdraw my consent for further participation in the NIHR BioResource but I allow the BioResource to retain my samples already provided for use in research. I understand that existing data can continue to be used and new data may be generated for adding to my research record. I will not be contacted for participating in future research.

B) No further use withdrawal - I withdraw my consent for further participation in the NIHR BioResource and I want my centrally stored samples destroyed. No new samples can be distributed for the generation of new data. No further data will be retrieved from my health-related records and no new data from laboratory measurements will be added to the research databases; pre-existing data will not be used in analysis wherever possible.

Samples

If you choose a No further use withdrawal, which includes the destruction of your sample please note:

  • We can only destroy samples stored at our central national repository
  • Samples that have already been prepared for testing or shared with researchers cannot be destroyed
  • Samples sent for testing will not be recalled, but no new data will be added to our research database
  • Your samples are not labelled with any personal identifiable information.

Data

If you choose a No further contact withdrawal:

  • We will remove the majority of your contact details, some information is retained for audit purposes
  • We will not invite you to future research studies
  • Your data may be used in research studies that do not require making further contact

If you choose a No further use withdrawal:

  • We will delete your contact details, but retain a skeleton record along with your consent form
  • Some information has to be retained for audit purposes. It will be visible to only the very few individuals who manage this function
  • Research data will no longer be connected with you, and will not be used again.
  • Any data that has been archived cannot be destroyed, but will not be used to contact you or for research. These archives are only available to qualified system administrators who use them in case of computer failure.
  • Any sample that has already been distributed for research cannot be retrieved or destroyed.
  • We cannot destroy data already shared with other researchers, we will not share any further data where possible
  • Some data may already be in a pipeline to be shared when we receive a withdrawal request, this cannot be stopped but we will not authorise any new requests for future use

Once you have notified us of your request to be withdrawn, and we have all the information needed to process the request, we will not contact you again.  Occasionally we will need extra information to process your withdrawal.

If you do not confirm what type of withdrawal you would like, or tell us your wishes for your sample and data, we will process a No further contact withdrawal.  This means we will retain your samples and data for future use, but we will not contact you again.

Our thanks to you

Whether or not you decide to leave, we thank you for supporting the BioResource community. We hope it has been a positive experience for you.

We very much appreciate the time and commitment you have generously given to our research studies.
